It is 'good
form' for a host to accompany his Arab visitor to the street or waiting
car. The Arab’s insistence that his host remain comfortably in the living
room is largely a formality.
Coffee or some refreshment is normally served by the host promptly upon
the arrival of a guest. Arab coffee, flavored with cardamom, is served in
a small portions by a bearer who waits to serve again until a sign is
given. One or two cups are polite, but rarely more than three. The sign to
indicate that no more coffee is desired is to shake the cup with a wrist
motion before returning it to the server. Coffee may be followed by tea
and soft drinks.
Neither food nor drink should ever be taken with the left hand from an
Arab host or bearer. However, despite stories to the contrary, many Arabs
hold their fork in their left hand when actually eating and left-handed
people need not anticipate embarrassment if they eat as they would at
home.
Remember:
You are an
invited guest in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. You were not forced to come
here. You are subject to their local laws. It is prudent for your family
to make itself aware of the relevant laws and customs.
Tips For New Comers
-
Get involved, go
out and meet people from other compounds and other companies. Find out
about the social groups in the area such as Expat Women of the Eastern
Province, British Wives, British and American Businessmen groups. Expand
your horizons. Most people are very willing to help newcomers since they
were once newcomers themselves.
-
Learn your way
around. Study the city map, learn the street names, the roundabouts and
landmarks. Knowing how to get around will build your confidence and help
you feel more independent.
-
Please don’t
stare at someone when he is praying, or walking directly in front of him
which blocks the way between himself and Mecca.
-
Refrain from
discussing politics and religion.
-
Always carry
with you a copy of your passport and/or your husband’s iqama. Or your
company’s ID card may be sufficient. Check with your company to determine
what is the proper identification to have with you at all times.
-
Try to find
recipes that use local ingredients and learn to substitute. Be inventive
when you cook. Try some of the local foods and restaurants.
-
Always drink
plenty of bottled water, especially during warm weather.
